Vik Muniz' Waste Land. Film/Photo Series. Brazil.
Director Lucy Walker and artist Vik Muniz filmed Waste Land for over three years. The film follows Muniz as he journeys from Brooklyn home to the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, in his native Brazil. There he photographs a band of “catadores”-pickers of recyclable materials and has them recreate their own images out of the garbage they find. Muniz is one of my fave contemporary artists in that his work is always technically unique, visually impressive, and with this current project, now also extremely relevant and powerful in its message.
